Coding on your a smartphone? Like seriously? Well, yeah, it is possible. In this article we will try and answer some of the frequently asked questions in relation to mobile coding. Not coding mobile apps, but coding apps and other cool things on your phone. So here’s what this article will cover :
- Can I really Program cool stuff on my phone.
- What kind of phone do I need?
- Where do I begin?
- A word of advice.
Is it really possible to Code on my phone?
This is the most frequently asked question. And my answer to this is YES! I myself am a mobile Coder. I’m actually writing this article on my phone. I’ve developed a few Android apps, designed a few websites, thus I am not ignorant of the possibility of doing great things on a smartphone.
What kind of phone do I need.
This one is a bit tricky, because preferences differ. I will just highlight the important aspects, then you simply go with the smartphone of your choice.
Simply find a phone with enough storage. You’ll really need it. Where possible expand it with an external USB or a micro SD card.
Make sure your phone has enough RAM to cater for some RAM hungry coding applications. At least 1GB is ok for a start.
If possible find an external keyboard for your phone. That will make coding less painful .
Where Do I begin?
Without direction, you’ll go in circles. I’ve broken down the process into four stages.
- Environment Setup
- Gather learning Resources
- Plan the learning
- Build Something
Environment Setup
After you’ve decided what you want to learn, you need to set up your coding environment. In simple terms, you need an integrated Development Environment (IDE). This is an application that lets you code in it and see your output as well. Here are some suggestions.
For Android Development
- AIDE
- Sketchware Pro
- Droid Script
- Java N IDE
For web design
- Trebedit
Those are enough to get you going. There are plenty others also for different purposes, will make a post about that some day.
Find learning Resources
There are plenty free materials out out there to help you. We will soon have tutorials here as well.
Find a roadmap first on what you have to learn, so that you learn in order. After that look for documents, tutorials apps like solo learn, Enki and programming hub or websites like w3 schools. They will help you get some decent knowledge on the area of your preference.
Plan the learning
Of cause, your environment is ready, your resources are there. Now you need to plan when to code and what do code. Give yourself regular time to code for the best results.
Build Something
After you’ve learnt and practiced. It’s time for a real project. Build a website, or a simple app to test your knowledge skills. Bring all your knowledge together and code some useful apps.
A word of Advice
Conclusively, get out there and do something. It all begins with one step. It won’t be easy, but it’s worth the time. Happy coding!
